Libraries are not just a repository for books—they are spaces for people to find knowledge, community, and sometimes just a place to sit. It is one of the few places that have no restrictions to entry: you don't need money, you don't need a reason, you don't need credentials. You come as you are and stay as long as you want.
Oak Park Public Library is a world-class library with the progressive mission of empowering every voice. It is the beloved heart of our community.
I teach English at Oak Park River Forest High School as well as at The School at the Art Institute of Chicago. My role as a writing teacher is to welcome students into the literary community. As a library board trustee, that would be an abiding value.
Stories build civilizations, which is why everyone must be allowed to tell their stories. Censoring whose stories are told has real-world consequences: it determines who gets to exist and who gets to have power. Knowing this, I understand what is at stake when books are banned.
Showing up is a creative act. We must use the political space and voice we have to create a better and kinder world. I decided to run for trustee because I love the library and I can use all my voice, power, creativity, and love to make sure it stays a library for all for always.
Everyone feels welcome in the library
Knowledge is accessible to all
Library staff is happy
The board and staff represent the community
As you support me, please also vote for the other Library for All, for Always candidates Colin Bird-Martinez and Annie Wilkinson.
